Mathieu van der Poel sprints to his first road win of 2019 at Tour of Antalya in Turkey

Dutch star lands Corendon Circus its first win as Pro Conti-level team

Tour of Antalya Mathieu van der Poel

Hot off reclaiming his rainbow stripes at 2019 UCI cyclocross championships in Denmark, Mathieu van der Poel has already landed his first win of the road season.

Van der Poel’s win comes less than a month after his world championship ride in Bogense, Den., leaving little time for anything resembling an “off season.” The Dutch rider will be taking on a busy calendar, mixing select road appearances with a full calendar of cross country mountain bike World Cup races.

More than just the first of what will likely be many paved van der Poel victory salutes, the Tour of Antalya Stage 1 win marks Corendon Circus’ first win since the team was granted UCI Pro Continental status earlier this year.

Behind the flying Dutch rider, Serbian pro DuÅ¡an Rajović finished second in the sprint, riding for Adria Mobil team. Bas van der Kooij, also from The Netherlands, finished third for the Monkey Town – A Block Cycling Team.

Billing itself as “Tour of Heaven,” the four day stage race runs from February 21 – 24, 2019. For more from the first stage of racing in Turkey, check out the Tour of Antalya’s Instagram. With winding, narrow roads meeting waterfront vistas, this looks like the kind of gritty and dynamic racing that would be amazing to watch live:
