Mud fest in store for 2018 world cyclocross championships
Rain saturated the Valkenburg course heading into championship weekend
In the mud of Valkenburg, champions will be crowned. When the winners of the weekends world cyclocross championships races which take place Saturday and Sunday step onto the top step of the podium, they will have had to navigate a rutted course that was saturated with rain before race weekend. The result has been thick mud throughout the course that will stick to bikes, get caught in drive trains and make traction precarious. The race winners will have a lot of cleaning up to do before they are presented with their fresh white rainbow jerseys.
Mud and more mud
The teams have been out pre-riding the course on Friday discovering how challenging the conditions are. That is surely good news for cyclocross fans as it promises to make the racing messy and exciting. The conditions will change over the weekend with giant ruts already forming in the dense mud.
Team Canada
Canada has 13 athletes in the Netherlands who will be donning the maple leaf over the weekend including three current Canadian national champions.
