A cyclist was struck and injured in Bonavista, N.L., on Monday evening by an SUV.

The 44-year-old male cyclist was taken to the hospital in St. John’s with serious injuries, although they’re not believed to be life-threatening.

The accident happened on Church Street and the driver, a 55-year-old female, was arrested shortly after and is due to appear in provincial court in Clarenville. She faces charges in the new year of impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm after refusing to provide a breathalyzer test. She was released from custody shortly after.

Newfoundland, according to recent census data,  has the lowest rate of cyclist commuters in the country, but St. John’s is in the midst of a bicycle infrastructure upgrade that began in 2011.
