Ontario criterium championships and the Tour de Via Italia

OCA-Logo-300x225On Saturday, Jeff Schiller (Two Wheels/Epic Sports/BCC) won the elite men’s Ontario Criterium Championships. Schiller outsprinted four others in a break-way that finished almost a minute ahead of the main field. Ed Veal (Real Deal Gears) placed second, while Dave Byer (Octto-Cervelo) placed third.

Ben Andrew (Stevens – The Cyclery) placed 11th in the elite men’s race and was the first under-23 rider to cross the line, therefore taking the crown as Ontario under-23 criterium Champion.  James Orton (Team NCCH) and Tommy Waldeck (Octto –Cervelo) rounded out the podium in that category.

In the elite women’s race, Emily Flynn (Stevens p/b The Cyclery) won ahead of Sarah Rasmussen (Real Deal/Gears) and Chantal Thompson (Midweek Cycling Club).

On Sunday, Bobby Lea (Custom Velo) won the Tour de Via Italia solo ahead of Jeff Schiller who barely held off a chasing duo to finish second. Paul Martin (Netherland Rubber Cycling) finished third. Lea’s teammate, Jackie Simes won the field sprint for fifth ahead of Ed Veal (Real Deal Gears). Sunday’s race featured a deeper field and a faster, longer race. Although it was unexpected given the high speeds the course elicited, a break-away establish itself relatively early. A dominate solo move by Bobby Lea ultimately won the day in a race that attracted many strong racers from across the border in the United States.

In the all women’s race, 13 women contested the event. Elizabeth Steel (Pegasus) won ahead of Danielle McKibbon (Orthocare Cycling Team) in a two up sprint. Kacey Lloyd (Long Tail Creative) finished third solo, 34-seconds behind the winner and 48-seconds ahead of Emily Flynn (Stevens – The Cyclery) who won the sprint for fourth.
