Open water and closed roads: James Bay Descent hits halfway

Four riders have fat biked unsupported from from Attawapiskat to Moosonee, Ont.

The James Bay Descent

The four riders making up the James Bay Descent team have made it half way through their 600km unsupported ride. Eric Batty, Buck Miller, Ryan Atkins and former WorldTour road pro Ted King started in Attawapiskat, and have ridden by fat bike to Moosonee, Ont.

After covering 118 km to make it Moosonee, the quartet are taking a rest day. There, they are visiting with the local Moosonee Public School, talking to students and teachers. They should be continuing their trip south today, if the winter roads have re-opened.

The crew’s original plan to ride from Attawapiskat to Akimiski island had to be adjusted on the opening day. Team member Eric Batty reports that, weather was a frigid -30 C, there was too much open water to risk riding to the island in James Bay.

The James Bay Descent team has hit their $5,000 target, but you can still make donations to the Timmins Native Friendship Center through the ride’s GoFundMe page. You can hear more from Ted King about the James Bay Descent on the Canadian Cycling Magazine podcast.
