Orica-GreenEdge riders Tuft and Meier headline B.C. Superweek

Ten-day stage race offers more than $100,000 in cash prizes, July 6-15.

Orica-GreenEdge teammates Svein Tuft and Christian Meier are expected to participate in the notorious B.C. Superweek held from July 6-15 in Lower Mainland.

“We really look forward to B.C. Superweek because our cycling roots are here, our best memories have always been this type of racing, and it’s a chance to race in your hometown in front of friends and family,” Tuft said. “We don’t get that opportunity much in Europe, so it’s a real treat to come back and race.”

This year’s event will host a series of top-level racers including Will Routley and Ryan Anderson (SpiderTech p/b C10), brothers Hilton and Jonny Clarke (UnitedHealthcare), and Roman Van Uden (PureBlackRacing).

“There are always a handful of amazing guys that come up and it’s always competitive, but I would have to think with that money is even more incentive to bring up a few more guys,” said Routley. “A lot of guys saw that [the prize list] and said ‘man, I want to book B.C. Superweek into my summer.'”

B.C. Superweek includes the Tour de Delta from July 6-8, UBC Grand Prix on July 10, Gastown Grand Prix on July 11, Giro di Burnaby on July 12 and the Tour de White Rock from July 13-15. The event offers more than $100,000 in cash prizes and hosts over 5,000 spectators at each race.

“B.C. Superweek always has some of the best atmosphere around,” Meier said. “And for me personally, Gastown is still one of the most electrifying ambiances of all the races I have ever done. Where else do you get to race with 30,000 to 40,000 people – it’s just spectacular. I’ve talked to a few former teammates, and it’s really caught the attention of a lot of people. They’re trying to make a big push to come for B.C. Superweek.”
