Para-cycling initiation session in Montreal Monday

The Canadian Cycling Association is hosting an initiation session for para-cycling in Montreal Monday.

The Canadian Cycling Association is hosting an initiation session for para-cycling at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal Monday.

The session, which runs from noon to 4 p.m., will give interested athletes the option to try out the different para-cycling categories. These include hand-bikes for people who are paralyzed; tandems for the visually impaired; and tricycles for those with cerebral palsy.

The session comes just two days before the opening event of the para-cycling season, the Challenge Longhi in Blainville, Que., on Wednesday. This will be followed by the Defi Sportif stage race on Saturday and Sunday in Montreal.

Canada, and in particular Quebec, has been a hotbed of para-cycling for many years. The 2010 para-cycling worlds were held in Baie Comeau, Que., which will also host the 2011 world cup final on July 8 to 10. It was also recently announced that the 2013 para-cycling world cup final will be held in Matane, Que., in August.
