Pesky varmint file: squirrel vandalizes bike on Iowa campus

An incident on an American college campus has cyclists wondering if their social contract with squirrels that humans avoid running over the tree-loving rodents in exchange for unmolested bikes is still being honoured.

Last week an associate math professor at Iowa Lakes Community College reported to police that his bicycle’s tires, seat, and lights were destroyed over the course of two days. No culprit was seen near the bike, and it was only after another professor came forward with a photo of the creature gnawing on a tire that the mystery was solved.

The professor has since parked his bike indoors, but it’s unknown whether the squirrel’s rampage will continue or whether its lust for rubber and plastic carnage has been sated.
