Primož Roglič showed he’s ready to challenge compatriot Tadej Pogačar at the Tour de France by winning the Critérium du Dauphiné on Sunday. Roglič and Danish teammate Jonas Vingegaard finished one-two on the final podium after dominating the final stage, with the positions reversed at the top of the mountain. Roglič added the Dauphiné trophy to that of this year’s Paris-Nice. On his palmares, the Slovenian has three Vuelta a España titles and eight other WorldTour stage race crowns.

The Course

After two early climbs to soften up the legs, the organizers sent the riders Cat. 1 Col de la Colombière and summit climb Plateau de Solaison in quick succession. Colombière was 11.9 km of 5.7 percent and HC-rated Solaison was 11.4 km at 8.9 percent. It was a very hot day.

That man in the white dots on blue jersey, Pierre Rolland, was in the first move that went clear on the opening climb, Cat. 1 Col de Plainpalais. Part of a 15-strong breakaway, he snaffled up the maximum KOM points on Col de Plainpalais and Cat. 3 Col de Leschaux.

Jumbo-Visma kept close tabs on the escape, which headed up Colombière with a 2:00 lead. The Cat. 1 ascent fragmented the breakaway, with a couple of escapees heading back to the field. Six riders tipped over the top.

The Final Throwdown of the 2022 Dauphiné, Plateau de Solaison

The sextet started up the HC mountain with just over a minute’s lead. Soon a trio remained at the business end of the race. Czech Jan Hirt, sixth in the Giro d’Italia, went solo.

Stage 3 winner David Gaudu was the first major GC player to crack. Only 10 riders remained in the yellow jersey group with 8 km to climb.

The last of the fugitives were lassoed with 6.3 km remaining. With 5.3 km to go, Jonas Vingegaard attacked around teammate Steven Kruijswijk and Roglič went with the Dane.

With Kruijswijk in the background, Vingegaard attacks with Roglic, O’Connor trying to hold the wheels.

Third place Ben O’Connor kept the Jumbo duo in sight. Roglič had to fight to hold Vingegaard’s wheel just before the red kite. They finished hand in hand, Vingegaard taking the day’s flowers.

Canadian James Piccoli was 26th.

The Tour de France begins in 19 days on July 1.
