Q and A with Zach Bell

We caught up with Zach Bell before the Track World Championships to ask a few questions.

The Track World Championships started on March 24 and run until March 28. Canada is fielding a very strong and talented team at the World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark.

We caught up with Zach Bell and asked him a few questions about his thoughts on the racing and his expectations.

What are your goals for the World Track Championships?
The goal is to progress on previous results. I have my sights set on a medal. I believe top 5 finishes are within reason if I perform to the level I believe I am capable of. There is always a dynamic within the race. If I read that dynamic right then I can make steps forward.

How are you feeling going into the Worlds?
I am feeling ready to represent Canada. My preparation has been better than it has been for a few years. There have been a few set backs but my prep has more or less been on course. So I am excited to see what I can achieve with the new support within the Track program.

You’ve had some excellent races leading into the World Championships – does this give you an extra ounce of confidence?
Being competitive is always good. But worlds is a different animal than the World Cups. It will take a different ride and a different kind of rider to be at the front here. The wins have been an excellent step in the right direction, however I am cautious about reading to much into that form. Winning one race never has any bearing on what happens the next time and ultimately you have to use the tools you have on the day to make the most of the situation…that is what leads to continued success.

Are you feeling any pressure?
Unfortunately I did not get granted a spot in the omnium. This is the event that carried the most pressure, being in the Olympics and given my performance last year. I don’t feel too much pressure I just see opportunities to demonstrate how our national program has progressed.

How do you handle training for the track during the road season?
It is a hard mix, and one I find compliments the other to a point. Much of the road calendar contributes to the success on the track and visa versa. However I am still learning how to properly balance.

Which discipline takes precedence for you?
It depends on the event and time of year. At this point I am still trying to grow in both disciplines.

How is life in Holland?
Holland was a great venue and was good place to start. Hopefully it is a venue you can use more in the future.

Anything you miss from home?
My wife, I always miss my wife. I am talking to her right now on Skype as I send you these answers. I also miss playing my guitar and training at home.

Anything you like better in Holland?
I like the houses and neighborhoods. I studied architecture in school so I am partial to design and Holland is full of well thought out design.
