Quebec withdraws 2015 road worlds bid

Quebec City is no longer in the running to host the 2015 road world championships, organizer Serge Arsenault said Friday.

Quebec City is no longer in the running to host the 2015 road world championships, organizer Serge Arsenault told Radio Canada Friday.

The International Cycling Union was informed of the decision last week.

Arsenault, who organizes the WorldTour Grand Prix de Quebec and Grand Prix de Montreal, cited the $20-million cost of running the one-off world championships as the main factor.

“It lasts one week and afterwards nobody talks about it,” he told Radio-Canada. “It’s the recurring events that count.”

Arsenault will focus his energies on the Quebec and Montreal races. He currently has a contract to run the events until 2014.

Oman and Richmond, Va., are the two remaining candidates. The UCI will announce its choice in September.
