Quick-Step Floors were sitting on 67 wins on the season when they lined-up for the world team time trial in Innsbruck, Austria on Sunday. By the time they’d cross the line after 62.8 km of racing, their teammate Philippe Gilbert returning from injury had won the GP Isbergues on his return from a frightening injury at the Tour de France. Minutes later, as defending champions Team Sunweb crossed the line 18 seconds slower than the Belgian super team, it was confirmed that the Wolfpack added the world championships rainbow jersey to their impressive season.

Quick-Step had won the inaugural trade team TTT in 2012 and defended the title in 2013. They won it again in 2016 and now in its last edition as a trade team competition before turning in a mixed gender national competition with three women and three men on each team, they sealed the title in commanding fashion.

The team composed of Kasper Asgreen, Laurens de Plus, Bob Jungles, Yves Lampaert, Maximilian Schachmann and Niki Terpstra stopped the clock at 1:07:25 with three teams still on course. Sky would only manage fourth while pre-race favourites BMC stopped the clock 20-second slower than Quick-Step. Sunweb could only manage second one second ahead of BMC and 19 behind the new world champions who erupted in celebration as the Dutch team posted a slower time.

Earlier in the day, Canyon-SRAM won the women’s TTT title ahead of Boels-Dolmans and Team Sunweb. The trade team that takes the title is awarded the privilege of wearing a rainbow emblem on their team kits the following season. The TTT in 2018 is the last time the trade teams will contest the title at the UCI Road World Championships as the format is being changed in the coming years.
