Race weekend in Calgary

Jason Lapierre Memorial Race Weekend kicks off Saturday morning

In memory of Jason Lapierre, a local ski and cycling enthusiast, the SpeedTheory Cycling Club is hosting a series of bicycle races this weekend in the Calgary area presented by ARC Resources Ltd. The weekend starts with the provincial time trial championships on Saturday morning in Acme. The afternoon events kick off in the Eau Claire area of downtown Calgary with a kid’s fun race at 4:30 p.m. on a closed city circuit where everyone is guaranteed a medal.

Two full city blocks in Eau Claire will be closed to traffic and set up to run numerous criterium races for adults beginning at 5 p.m., with the top racers starting at 8:10 p.m. It’s a spectator-friendly event where cyclists will ride laps around the closed course with high speeds and tight corners. The action continues Sunday morning with a road race in Bergen, just northwest of town.
