Ross Knight Awarded Syl Apps Special Achievment Award

Ross Knight, of Ottawa, was awarded the Syl Apps Special Achievement Award.

On Thursday April 15, Ross Knight was awarded the Syl Apps Special Achievement Award. This award is presented annually by the by the Province of Ontario to Ontario volunteers who have contributed to the development of sport in the province. Knight, a former racer, has been a long-time coach, tireless volunteer, race organizer and mentor to many bike racers in Ontario and specifically the National Capital Region.

Knight started cycling seriously in the summer of 1971 and took out his first racing license in the summer of 1973. Knight retired from cycling at the end of the 1986 season and after a three year break, he returned to cycling as a coach. He coached the Ottawa Bicycle Club for three years followed by private consulting. Knight has managed teams at over 20 international sanctioned events, 25 national sanctioned events and too many provincial sanctioned events to keep track of. Currently Ross is NCCP certified at level 3 in Cycling and Rowing.

For the past 25 years, Knight has been running the Tuesday night training criteriums in Ottawa. Held every Tuesday night from mid-April until September, these training races give elite and new racers an opportunity to race, learn, and have fun. In addition to devoting every Tuesday night to Ottawa racers, Knight also runs the Espoir Cycling Bursary. This bursary is awarded annually to two or three athletes who wish to develop further as cyclists, bursary funds are typically used for travel to national or international races that may not otherwise be possible.
