A week after winning the under-23 Canadian championship title then sealing victory in the UCI race at Ptbo CX, Ruby West of Dundas, Ont. won opening elite women’s race at the Supercross Cup in Suffern, NY. Only 19-years-old and West has racked up 10 UCI elite wins in the past two seasons.

West worked hard for her most recent victory coming back from a rough start. She trailed leader Rebecca Fahringer going into the final lap but in the final moments of the race caught and passed the American to win by just seven seconds.

Magdeleine Vallieres-Mill, another young rider from Canada, finished behind Fahringer in third, a great result for the 17-year-old from Sherbrooke, Que.

The conditions in Suffern were wintery with snow covering the course but it was turned into a muddy mess from the racing making for tricky race conditions. The hardest sections of the course, including a brutally long and muddy run-up, were covered in ankle deep mud from the wet conditions.

Last year, West won the Vittoria series overall after sweeping the NBX Gran Prix of Cyclocross in Warwick, Rhode Island. Since recovering from a concussion she sustained in training before the Waterloo World Cup, West has won both days of the Sherbrooke CX UCI race, took second at the Pan-Am championships at the Silver Goose, and won the Canadian U23 title and the UCI race the day after.

In the elite men’s race, Pan Am champion Curtis White took the win ahead of Kerry Warner and Merwin Davis.
