Russia and Italy overcome major mishaps to claim Yorkshire Worlds’ first individual gold medals

The Dutch take medals in first three championships

After the novelty of Sunday’s team time trial mixed relay, the individual chrono action of Yorkshire 2019 got underway on Monday with Russia and Italy claiming the first two gold medals. Both champions experienced delays for different reasons. The Netherlands have three medals from three contests.

Junior Women Time Trial

The first race on Monday was the Junior women’s time trial, one lap of the 13.7 course. Last season in Innsbruck, Canadian Simone Boilard was the bronze medalist.

Russia’s Aigul Gareeva took the gold with a time of 26:16, but only after she went off course.

The closest athlete to Gareeva was Dutch rider Shirin van Anrooij, only four-seconds back. For the second year in a row, Elynor Bäckstedt, daughter of 2004 Paris-Roubaix winner Magnus Bäckstedt, earned the bronze, having kept her machine upright after a dicey moment in a wet corner.

The top Canadian was Magdeleine Vallieres-Mill at 22nd, +1:25, while Camille Primeau was 30th, +1:46.

Gold) Aigul Gareeva (Russia) 22:16
Silver) Shirin van Anrooij (The Netherlands) +0:04
Bronze) Elynor Bäckstedt (Great Britain) +0:11
22) Magdeleine Vallieres-Mill (Canada) +1:25
30) Camille Primeau (Canada) +1:46

Junior Men Time Trial

Two laps of the course awaited the Junior men, ie: Sunday’s team time trial mixed relay route.

Estonian Henri Treimuth led with 40:10, but in short order Brit Oscar Nilsson-Julien and then Dutchman Enzo Leijnse were in the hot seat.

Despite having a bike change immediately after the start, Italian Antonio Tiberi usurped Leijnse’s throne with 38:28.

Italy’s Andrea Piccoli, bronze to Remco Evenepoel last year, was the last to start, but it seemed that Tiberi had American Quinn Simmons and Brit Leo Hayter more to fear than his compatriot.

But Tiberi prevailed, with Leijnse holding on for silver and German Marco Brenner earning bronze. The top Canadian was Jacob Rabuliak in 25th at +2:26. Tristan Jussaume was 55th, +4:55.

Yorkshire 2019 continues Tuesday with the U23 men and elite women rolling the chrono.

Gold) Antonio Tiberi (Italy) 38:28
Silver) Enzo Leijnse (The Netherlands) +0:07
Bronze) Marco Brenner (Germany) +0:12
25) Jacob Rabuliak (Canada) +2:26
55) Tristan Jussaume (Canada) +4:55
