Ryan Roth on Jet Fuel–Norco’s successful Niagara Classic
On Sunday, Ryan Roth of Jet Fuel–Norco soloed to victory 1:36 ahead of second place. His teammate, Anton Varabei, out sprinted David Drouin (NCCH powered by DEC Express) to place second and Derrek Ivey (Wheels of Bloor/Graywood Development) placed fourth.
The race is one of the more challenging courses on the Ontario race circuit. Riders are faced with the infamous Effingham Hill every lap. The elite men climbed it 10 times, causing many splits and selections.
The race split into four main groups at the start. With Jet Fuel well represented in all of the moves, the team had a tactical advantage for its leader Ryan Roth, who was quite happy with his team’s effort. “I think we rode a bit sharper as a team at Niagara. We had good representation in all the moves and never got caught in a bad position,” said Roth. “I was a bit worried about halfway through the race as I was a stuck in an unmotivated group, but I kept trying and eventually worked my way up to the two leaders starting the last lap.” On that last lap, while climbing Effingham, Roth was able to ride away at the opportune moment and win the day.
Sarah Rasmussen of Real Deal/Gears presented by WaspCam won the elite women’s race in a field sprint. She finished ahead of Jessica Allen (NCCH powered by DEC Express) and Suzie Brown (Holiday Inn) in second and third, respectively. You can see the full results here. The next Ontario Cup race is the KW Classic on June 8.
