Sandra Walter, Cameron Jette win BSP Canada Cup

Defending Canada Cup champion Sandra Walter of Liv/Giant won the second round of the Canada Cup series in Baie Saint Paul, Que., this weekend. Walter’s performance meant the BC rider took over the series leader’s jersey after finishing second to Catharine Pendel at the opening round in Mont Tremblant last week.

Overnight rain made the already technical course especially challenging.

“I thought it was over at the start when I went from the front row to the back in seconds,” said Walter, who has spent much of the last week battling illness. “I didn’t panic, though, and focused on staying smooth and consistent. This course is so much about efficiency, riding cleanly, and carrying speed through the many pace changes and rough roots and rocks.”

Walter won the race handily with a time of one hour, 26 minutes, 48.3 seconds, nearly a minute ahead of the second placed Haley Smith. However, Smith, who rides for the Norco Factory Team spent some time in the lead during the race before falling to second overall.

Canadian Olympian Marie-Hélène Prémont finished third. Prémont retired from full time competition, but with Baie Saint Paul being very close to her home, Prémont raced as an independent, finishing just under three minutes back of Walter.

Cindy Montambault of Cvm 2 Vals finished fourth, seconds ahead of fifth placed Amanda Sin of Scott-3Rox.

Sin’s teammate Cameron Jette of Toronto won his first UCI race, besting the men’s field handily in a time of 1:29:10.0.

Jette was well ahead of second placed Andrew Watson of the Norco Factory Team, who finished second. Third place went to Patrick Chartrand of Rocky Mountain. Norco riders claimed the remainder of the podium, with Evan Guthrie and Andrew L’Esperance filling out fourth and fifth.
