Sky’s Michael Barry holds steady in Giro

Canada's only rider in the Giro d'Italia, Sky's Michael Barry is hanging in the top 65 on GC with three hard stages to go

Canada’s Michael Barry had little trouble holding his position of 61st in the Giro d’Italia 18th stage today. Barry came into pro cycling’s first Grand Tour of the year as easily the most experienced of the nine North Americans. He’s Sky’s second highest rider on the general classification after Thomas Lovkvist in 22nd.

On his blog Michael Barry – Le Metier, the veteran racer has chronicled the effects of this very difficult edition on the peloton. He writes, “many riders are coughing and spitting as their weakened immune systems fight to battle bacteria and viruses.” Barry has also posted several SRM powermeter readouts from the first stages on his blog: http://michaelbarry.ca

Not just clinging tenaciously to the top third of the GC, Barry had been driving the Sky sprint train before David Appollonio and most of the rest of the sprinters went home. This is Barry’s 6th Giro d’Italia.
