Specialty channel promises 150 race days next year

Sportsnet is promising Canadian cycling fans more than 150 cycling race days on television next season. The sports speciality channel also announced a six-year deal with the Tour de France for exclusive national rights to air the 21-day race beginning in 2014.

“The Tour de France is the ultimate event in cycling,” vice-president of finance and sports programming of Rogers Media Navaid Mansuri said in a press release.

“We are thrilled to partner with the Amaury Sport Organization for the exclusive Canadian rights for this world-class event, which solidifies our commitment to providing fans with premium cycling content across multiple platforms and strengthens Sportsnet’s already robust portfolio of cycling programming.”

The exclusive Canadian rights package includes television, digital and mobile access to the grand tour.

Next season, Sportsnet will broadcast international events like the Giro d’Italia, Vuelta a Espana, Tour de Suisse, Tour of California and the Santos Tour Down Under. It will also showcase the inaugural Tour of Alberta.
