After 15 years with Colnago, Sven Nys switches to Trek

On New Year’s Day, Sven Nys won the GP Sven Nys while riding a brand new Trek Boone for the first time. Perhaps it was the worst kept secret in cyclocross: since August, the word has been out that after a 15 year relationship with Italian bike manufacturer Colnago, Sven Nys would be moving on as of Dec. 31, 2013. As arguably the greatest cyclocross racer ever, the Cannibal from Baal’s move to Trek was surprising and unexpected.

During Nys’s 15 year career as a professional while riding a Colnago, he has won the world championships twice, eight Belgian cyclocross championships, the World Cup series six times among myriad other series and races. When the rumours started back in August, many were speculating on the reasons behind Nys’ decision. One of the more prevalent speculations is that Colnago as a brand is known more for its history and artistry as opposed to being at the forefront of technological advancement.

Nys’ move has sparked a mixed response: some fans didn’t approve of his switch, suggesting that Nys is a “sellout” while others are indifferent. Nevertheless, as one of the world’s top ‘crossers, the transfer will be closely followed. In all likelihood, Nys will never win as many races as he did with his Colnago. However, it’s impossible to predict the future. After all, Chris Horner won a Grand Tour at 41 while riding a Trek. It seems fitting that Sven Nys could very well approach unbeatable status with his new steed.

In time, cyclocross fans will be able to determine if Nys has made a good move or not.
