Talking Giro with Svein Tuft

Svein Tuft checks in before the start of today's team time trial at the Giro D'Italia.

Svein Tuft of Garmin-Transitions is racing in the three week Giro D’Italia and sent us this update before the start of today’s team time trial:

Congrats on your result in the opening time trial. Can you tell us a bit about your riding strategy for the time trial?
I was pretty surprised with the prologue actually. I’ve been dealing with allergies all week so I didn’t expect to feel too good. On a slippery wet course I rode conservatively, but looking back now I wish I took a few more risks.
How is the mood amongst the team with Farrar’s win and Van de Velde’s injury?
The mood of the team on stage 2 was fantastic. It was a day where anything could have happened and with Tyler crashing so hard 30k out it didn’t look so good. he recovered well and the team dialed in the leadout and Tyler pulled it off. It was also my birthday, so it was a great way to spend it.
The team time trial is today – a major focus for most teams, what is Garmin looking for in this event?
This day goes to show that you need to take these Grand Tours a day at a time. Its a huge loss for us to lose Christian, but we must troop on. Our minds switched immediately to winning the TTT. You can’t dwell on the negative. Our goal from the very start was to win this TTT.
How did you spend your “rest” day?
My rest day was spent sleeping in late and then riding the course. A massage in the afternoon, followed by more sleep. The day really flew by. Now just 11 more days till the next rest:)
