The action continued in Gatineau, Que. on Friday, as a field of 66 riders took to the road for the Grand Prix Cycliste Gatineau’s time trial at the UCI WE 1.1 Chrono Gatineau.

Covering a distance of 11.5 km and clocking an average speed of 44.2 km/h, the Chrono was an exercise in sheer strength and endurance on a bike. Unbent by the big Gatineau road race the previous day, participants from Velocio SRAM and Twenty16 posted the top performances, cementing their respective top-tier positions in the event.

Five competitors, meanwhile, didn’t start the day’s time trial: Meredith Bunkers, Loren Rowney, Stefanie Sydlik, Hayley Jones and Kristi Lay Giroux.

Carmen Small — number 40 in the start list, representing Twenty16 — recorded the best time at 0:15:36, followed by Canada’s Karol-Ann Canuel and Tayler Wiles of the US, riding for Velocio SRAM, each eight seconds behind Small at 0:15:44. Other Canadians putting in strong performances included Tara Whitten of Team OPUS – The Cyclery, finishing 8th in the race with a time of 0:15:59; Jasmin Glaesser of Team OPTUM at 0:16:07, placing 10th; and Leah Kirchmann, also of OPTUM, whose time of 0:16:15 ranked her 13th.

For Anika Todd of Team TIBCO, though, whose strong inclination towards time trial riding was highlighted seen as a key strength going into Gatineau, fortune just wasn’t smiling. 1:08 behind Carmen Small with a time of 0:16:44, Todd finished the time trial in 39th place.
