The Intrepid Ride kicks off in September

A new style of gran fondo in the heart of the Okanagan Valley

On Sept. 20, the three-stage Intrepid Ride will take gran fondo enthusiasts through the heart of the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia.

“I’ve chosen the Okanagan route because of the incredible riding terrain, fantastic weather and first class resorts,” said the co-founder of GranFondo Canada and Intrepid organizer Neil McKinnon. “Most cyclists feel they have to travel south or to Europe for that experience; the Intrepid route has it all and right here in Canada.” With the guarantee of 500 km of riding that is punctuated with 5,000 m of climbing, the event is meant to embody all of the key traits of a 1920’s bicycle race in a modern context.

For this event, the riders complete in two-person teams. This setup means riders will have to train and use strategy on how best to complete the course. Times and placing are calculated based on the slowest rider of the pair.

There is also a challenge for individual riders. Each stage will have king of the mountain (KOM) checkpoints whereby the fastest ascents of certain climbs will be timed. After each stage, respective KOM winners will be awarded.

The inaugural Intrepid Ride is an inclusive event and not limited to only avid cyclists. “Think of the Intrepid as a gran fondo/all-inclusive holiday. It is a three-day point-to-point tour, with an all-inclusive deluxe resort and entertainment experience,” said McKinnon. This event is open to all who are keen to take part in an adventurous challenge. Of course, the racing component is aimed toward only those who are eager to race. It is not mandatory to compete; participants are welcome to ride at their own pace and can expect a fully supported caravan throughout the entire event.
