The most popular food and drink on Strava in 2018

Year in review data shows the impact of group activities and the best way to get more kudos

What motivates cyclists to ride? A lot of different things but amoung food and drink, coffee takes the crown being the most mentioned in cyclists activities. Beer follows in second place amoung cyclists though it crushed coffee amoung runners.

In Strava’s year in review data, there’s a great deal of interesting information about what people like, how they ride and the general social habits of active Strava users.

In 2018, more than 3.6 kudos were given on athletes activities. If you want more kudos, the surest way is to post photos alongside your activities. Strava says activities with photos received on average twice as many kudos. Despite this, only nine per cent of cyclists post photos on their ride activities. Surprisingly, snowshoers are the most likely to upload a photo with 30 per cent of their activities accompanied by photographic evidence which presumably requires removing a heavy winter glove exposing the hand to the frigid elements. Another good strategy to get more attention is using emojis which also can double the number of kudos on your activity.

Group riding has a pretty significant impact on the duration and distance of activities. Rides done in groups covered nearly twice the distance as solo rides. So if you want to rack up some big kilometres budding up is a good start. Cyclists who ride in groups may travel further but their ride time is on average 10 per cent shorter than those who ride solo.

The fastest day of the week is Tuesday while the two slowest average ride speed days were on Saturday and Sunday when many cyclists do their longer rides versus the speedier mid-week rides. Sunday, May 6 was the most active ride day of the year,
