There was almost a disastrous finish for the junior women’s road world champion
Julie Bego was storming to the line when this happened
On Saturday, France’s Julie Bego won the 2023 junior women’s road race…but it could have gone much, much worse.
Those watching the race were horrified to see Bego coming into the finishing straight just as race marshals were allowing spectators to cross the road. On closed circuits such as the Glasgow course, it’s common to have race volunteers funnel people across the road, but only when there are no competitors riding by—especially the soon-to-be race winner!
Thankfully, Bego made it through clearly, but it was a tense moment. The French rider won the 70 km race in 1:54, with Orillia’s Bella Holmgren finishing 8th.
