Toronto Parking Authority rebrands Bixi

When the Toronto Parking Authority took over Bixi Toronto’s operations at the end of 2013, it was inevitable that changes would follow in how the troubled system had been run. Reports have now surfaced that the program will now be branded Bike Share Toronto, and will have a new logo that closely resembles the easy to identify “green P” of the municipal parking authority.

The branding isn’t the only change happening for the bike sharing program; Alta Bicycle Share from Portland, Oregon will take over management and operations of the system. Alta already runs similar systems in New York and Chicago.

A new pricing structure has also been announced, increasing the cost of short term use, but decreasing the cost of monthly and annual memberships. Members have the following options for memberships to the 1,000 bike system. Additionally, the bike share program is set to expand for the 2015 Pan Am games, growing from 80 stations to 100.

  • Annual membership: $90 (down from $97).
  • Monthly membership: $18 (down from $41).
  • 24-hour pass $7: (up from $5).
  • 72-hour pass: $15 (up from $12).

The Toronto Parking Authority will continue to seek additional sponsorship for the program.

The changes follow what has been a devastating year for Bixi.
