Toronto’s Bixi program to start May 3

Bike sharing program modeled after Montreal

The Bixi bike rental program first started in Montreal is set to launch in downtown Toronto May 3. The City of Toronto announced that the project will get started as planned with 1,000 bikes available from 80 stations.

In the initial launch, the area covered will be from Bloor at the north, Jarvis at the east, Union Station at the south and Spadina at the west. The program is designed mostly for one-way trips under 30 minutes. To use the bikes, there are varying ‘subscription’ fees. You can get a single day subscription for $5, a month-long subscription for $40, or a full-year for $95. From there, rides up to 40 minutes are free, rides between 30 and 60 minutes are $1.50 and rides from 60 to 90 minutes are $3.

The system first launched in Montreal was incredibly popular there and the project has now been expanded in a number of cities around the world. Ottawa will be the next Canadian city after Toronto to come on board later this year. For more information on the Bixi program, visit the website HERE.
