Cofidis rider arrested at Tour de France

Rémy Di Gregorio taken into custody as part of a year-long doping investigation, suspended

The Tour de France’s rest day has been marred by a doping scandal. Remy Di Gregorio, a French rider with the Cofidis team, was arrested at his hotel in Bourg-en-Bresse as part of a year-long doping investigation by a Marseilles judge.

Cofidis suspended the rider after he was taken into custody. Two other unidentified men were arrested in Marseille, Di Gregorio’s home town.

Di Gregorio came under investigation last year when he was apart of Astana. He first entered the pro ranks with FDJ. His palmares includes a win in last year’s Paris-Nice and the mountains classification in the 2007 Criterium du Dauphine. His highest placings in Grand Tours have been 21st in the 2010 Vuelta a Espana and 39th in last year’s Tour.

This is a blow to Cofidis, a wildcard team. Up until today the squad had its nine-man lineup intact and currently has Estonian Rein Taaramae in a three-way dogfight with BMC’s Tejay Van Garderen and RadioShack’s Tony Gallopin for the white young rider’s jersey.
