Tour de l’Abitibi: Stage 5 report

On Friday, French rider of Team Novo Nordisk, Quentin Valognes won the fifth stage of the Tour de l’Abitibi. He out-sprinted American rider Peter Coguen (Race CF) and Adrien Carpentier (Team France) to win the 116-km jaunt from Amos to Val d’Or, Que. The top placed Canadian was Willem Boersma of Team Canada placing fifth on the stage.
The stage was once again decided by a pack sprint. The roads between Amos and Val d’Or were predominantly flat without any steep rises. With an average speed just shy of 46 km/h, it was a day for the sprinters. Race leader Adrien Costa of Team U.S.A. was caught in the crash towards the end of the stage. Despite the help two other teammates, the trio was unable to catch the charging peloton. Costa finished 37-seconds behind the field. His efforts were in vain as Team U.S.A. lost the leader’s jersey. Stage 1 winner Rayane Bouhanni (Team France) took over the GC lead after Stage 5.
