Tour of Alberta forced to change stage route

Stage 4 flood damage reroute bypasses Canmore

The road and bridge damage caused by the late June flooding in Alberta has forced the organizers of the inaugural Tour of Alberta to make a course change to Stage 4. Originally the 200 kilometre stage, mostly on Highway 40, was originally slated to start Black Diamond through the Rocky Mountains to Canmore, a community 100 kilometres west of Calgary, but now it is a circuit beginning and ending in Black Mountain.

The Tour of Alberta organization will release details of the new route at a later date. The rest of the five stages, even those within the flood area of the Sheep, Bow and other rivers, won’t be affected.

Tour of Alberta Executive Director Duane Vienneau says that although most of Highway 40 will reopen in the coming weeks, “the condition of the road may create a safety hazard for the cyclists traveling at high speeds.”

The Tour of Alberta is scheduled from September 3 to 8 and departs from Edmonton with a prologue time trial of 7.3 kilometres.
