Tuft, Numainville and Duchesne lead Canada at worlds

Cycling Canada Cyclisme has selected the teams that will participate at the upcoming road world championships. Svein Tuft, Joëlle Numainville and Antoine Duchesne will lead their respective categories at the championships event held from Sept. 22-29 in Florence, Italy.

Tuft will represent the country in the individual time trial. He is a multiple-time former national champion in the event and secured the silver medal during the 2008 edition of the world championships held in Varese, Italy. Christian Meier and François Parisien will compete in the road race.

“This event is an opportunity to showcase competitiveness and performance in favour of development,” said Cycling Canada High Performance Director Jacques Landry. “We have to field a competitive team for this prestigious and high-calibre event. In the elite category for road cycling, Canada will no longer use the world championships as a development tool as many other races serve that purpose.”

Numainville, a double national champion in the time trial and road events, will lead a team during the road race that includes former road champions Denise Ramsden and Veronique Fortin along with Lex Albrecht, Leah Kirchmann and Karol-Ann Canuel. Numainville and Ramsden will also compete in the individual time trial.

Duchesne, who will compete in the road race, is the current national road champion in the under 23 category and he also earned the most aggressive rider jersey during Stage 4 at the Tour of Alberta. Alex Cataford, under 23 national time trial champion, will compete in the individual time trial.

“We have a solid team in place for these world championships, a team that has proven to be successful from the beginning of the season on roads all across the world,” said Landry
