UCI track and road worlds Day 4 recap

Canada entered day four of the UCI track and road world championships competing in the junior road races and on the track in the team pursuit, men’s sprints, women’s Keirin and men’s C 5 scratch race.

Junior women’s RR

The junior women started off the day with a five lap, 70 km race on the technical, 50 corner road circuit in downtown Glasgow. Canada’s starters were Isabella Holmgren, Nora Linton, Eloise Camire and Alexandra Volstad. The race quickly became a race of attrition and riders failed to keep pace on the uniquely challenging course. In the end, Holmgren maintained contact with the select group of 13 and finished 8th on the day with Frances Julie Bego taking the win.

A similar scene unfolded in the junior boys race where Canada’s team of Matthew Ney, Ethan Powell, and Charles Bergeron fought hard but to no avail to keep pace in their 127.2 km race. The race came down to a group of seven where Denmark’s Albert Philipsen broke free on the last lap to take the solo win.

Track worlds results

Down at the Chris Hoy Velodrome the wheels were beginning to fall off the track for team Canada. The Women’s team pursuit entered the day looking to better their time from yesterday and to challenge for the bronze medal qualification spot. With a change to the line-up after yesterday’s qualifier, the group imploded early in the race and barely hung on finishing with a disappointing time of 4:26, nearly 15 seconds back from their Italian opponent.

A similar outcome was on display in the men’s sprint as both Nick Wammes and Ryan Dodyk rode to early first round exits in the men’s sprint.

A bright spot of the day saw Tokyo sprint gold medalist Kelsey Mitchell qualify through to the Keirin quarter finals. Teammate and Olympic Keirin bronze medalist Lauriane Genest failed to qualify in her opening round race but advanced through to the next round via the repechage. Tarek Dahab rounded out the day for Canada finishing 13th in the Men C2 scratch race.
