Vasil Kiryienka is the 2015 elite men’s world time trial champion

The favourites were vanquished Wednesday at Richmond, Virginia’s 2015 UIC Road World Championships as Belurusan Vasil Kiryienka took the men’s time trial title. The other medals went to the first Italian and Frenchman on an elite men’s chrono podium in 21 and 18-years respectively. German favourite Tony Martin could only come seventh while Dutchman Tom Dumoulin placed fifth.

Australian Michael Hepburn was the first to face the course and he posted a time of 1:04:28 that stood until Brit Stephen Cummings by .31 of a second. Polish surprise package Marcin Bialoblocki of the Continental ONE Pro Cycling team then took over with 1:03:51. In the early part of the order Canadian Ryan Roth posted 1:06:20.

Once all the riders had hit the road, 2012 bronze medalist Kiryienka smashed the fastest first intermediate time check, and not even three-time and current world champion Martin could match it. The same applied to the second time check. Meanwhile, Australian champion Rohan Dennis needed a bike change and home favourite Taylor Phinney was getting faster.

Frenchman Jerome Coppel usurped Bialoblocki, destroying the Pole’s time by 56-seconds. Just ahead of Coppel, Hugo Houle stopped the clock at 1:05:05. Coppel’s high mark in turn fell to Italian Adriano Malori’s 1:02:38. It was clear that Martin and Dumoulin were lagging after the third time check.

Winner of the long time trial in this year’s Giro d’Italia, Kiryienka would not be denied, posting 1:02:29 to become the third Belarusian to win a UCI Road World Championship. Malori is the first Italian on the chrono podium since Andrea Chiurato in 1994, while Coppel is the first Frenchman to stand on the steps since Laurent Jalabert won the gold in 1997.

Hugo Houle was 25th.
