Vos wins final stage of Women’s Tour to wrap up yellow jersey, Canada’s Kirchmann 10th

Marianne Vos sewed up the Friends Life Women's Tour with a closing-stage victory, claiming the spoils in a bunch sprint for the third day in a row to secure the final yellow jersey and the sprinter's shirt for her Rabo-Liv team. Giorgia Bronzini of Wiggle-Honda came second on the stage. Amy Pieters of the Dutch national squad was third.

Marianne Vos sewed up the Friends Life Women’s Tour with a closing-stage victory, claiming the spoils in a bunch sprint for the third day in a row to secure the final yellow jersey and the sprinter’s shirt for her Rabo-Liv team. Giorgia Bronzini of Wiggle-Honda came second on the stage. Amy Pieters of the Dutch national squad was third.

The 108.3-km stage, run between Harwich and Bury St. Edmunds, was marked by wet and windy conditions. A break of four set out early featuring Emma Pooley, Lauren Hall, Loes Gunnewijk and Lisa Brennauer. Behind, the peloton contended for the remaining queen of the mountains points, with Sharon Laws of UnitedHealthcare eventually managing to clinch the climber’s title on the last categorized hill of the day.

With the break brought back, several contenders went on the attack but no one could shake Vos and the stage was set for a sprint. In the bunch kick, Vos was the class of the field, leading from a long way out to take the victory by a wide margin.

Canada’s Leah Kirchmann was again in the top 10, finishing 10th on the stage. Her Optum presented by Kelly Benefits teammate, and fellow Canadian, Denise Ramsden, rolled in with the pack. The two Canadian ladies did have the chance to step on the podium however; their Optum Pro Cycling squad won the honours for the top team in the race.

The GC podium was rounded out by Emma Johannson, in second, and Rosella Ratto, in third. Ratto also won the young rider’s classification.
