Watch: James Piccoli solos to win on Stage 4 of the Tour de Taiwan

Montreal-native uses a bold late attack to escape and hold off reduced peloton for the dramatic win

James Piccoli of Elevate-KHS won Stage 4 of the Tour de Taiwan in style on Wednesday. The Montreal-native and winner of the 2018 Tour de Beauce attacked a reduced peloton in the closing kilometres on a small rise in the road to take the win.

Race leader and Stage 2 winner Jonathan Clarke’s Floyd’s Pro Cycling Team didn’t immediately respond to the attack giving Piccoli the opportunity he needed to make a gap to the 30 rider lead group.

Clarke won the sprint for second place coming within a few bike lengths of catching Piccoli.

Clarke held onto his overall lead with one stage to go while Piccoli moved up 20 places in the general classification to second overall. He is now only 6 seconds back of Clarke with a final 192-km flat stage in Pingtung left.

With the win, Piccoli continues to build off his successful 2018 season when he finished seventh at the Colorado Classic, and won a stage and the overall at the Tour de Beauce.
