Watch: Wheelie hopping a flight of 28 stairs

Christopher Blevins hops an entire flight of stairs while doing a wheelie

Christopher Blevins showed off his sweet bike handling skills at the U.S. cyclocross national championships earlier this month. The American who rides for UCI pro continental squad Hagens Berman Axeon won the U23 cyclocross race in Reno, Nevada. In a video posted on Specialized’s Instagram page, Blevins hops up a concrete flight of stairs all while doing a wheelie.

The obstacle is 28 stairs and Blevins takes a moment to get set before hopping onto his back wheel and proceeding to blast up the first 10 stairs. Then with a couple of wheelie hops, he sets up for the second batch of stairs. Again getting over them clean. The final set are the most difficult and Blevins almost begins to lose his balance as he approaches the top but is able to hop the final stairs and land back on two wheelies clean.

Just clearing stairs is an achievement for many riders who are looking to gain an edge on their competitors in the heat of a ‘cross race or just to show off their skills. We aren’t sure when Blevins will put his wheelie hopping skills to use but watching him nail the staircase is impressive.

At American ‘cross nationals and made a wildly risky bunny hop in the heat of the race with Eric Brunner who would finish second. While we frequently see pros bunny hop barriers and all sorts of obstacles, three concrete stairs was a particularly tricky obstacle.

Blevins is not deterred, riding into them at full speed and clearing them cleanly. A skid in the corner for good measure. His competitor, who has dismounted to get over the stairs is gapped in the process. A risky move that pays off big time.

Blevins will be one to keep an eye on for his impressive bike handling skills. The video was originally taken on Nov. 21, 2017 and Blevins wrote on the post, “Since I’m racing some cross this year I’ve had to do some stairs practice. Running is not my favorite thing so I’m hoping this method will work.” The practice seems to have paid off with a national title in hand after he put those impressive skills to work in Reno.
