What’s next for Michael Woods after the Tour de France?

San Sebastian, the Laurentian Classics and the Worlds on Rusty's menu

Michael Woods fought bravely through two broken ribs to finish his first Tour de France in 32nd place, his third best Grand Tour result out of five. What’s next for the Canadian star?

Woods has informed Canadian Cycling Magazine that he is racing the next WorldTour contest, Saturday’s Clasica Ciclista San Sebastian, then the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec et Montréal in mid-September and finally the UCI Road World Championships on September 29 in Yorkshire, England.

The Clasica Ciclista San Sebastián is only 39 years old, but the Spanish race developed a reputation as a tough post-Tour competition. You have to go back to 2006 to find an edition that wasn’t won by a rider coming off the Tour. It features seven categorized climbs, including the 2-km, 10.9 percent Murgil-Tontorra cresting 9 km from the finish. Julian Alaphilippe will be back to defend his title, and Egan Bernal, Simon Yates and two-time winner Alejandro Valverde will line up San Sebastián. The race can be viewed on FloBikes.

Woods hasn’t raced the Laurentian Classics for the last couple of years. His best result was 23rd in the 2015 Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal. Last year Michael Matthews swept the races.

Last season saw one two of the greatest moments of Woods’ road cycling career: a stage win the Vuelta a España and third place in the World Championships. Yorkshire offers a hilly course but it might not have the steep grades of Innsbruck to suit Woods.
