Winnipeg hosts The Forks Ice Bike Race

crestTextWinnipeg is emerging as a winter cycling destination as of late. After hosting the International Winter Cycling Conference last week, riders descended upon The Forks National Park on Sunday to compete in the 14th annual Ice Bike Race.

Despite being called the Ice Bike Race, it is really a means for cycling enthusiasts to engage in a fun event that raises money for the Manitoba Lung Association. Riders showed up on a wide range of bicycles, from ‘cross to fat-tire bikes. One of the 150 registrants rode a unicycle. The course featured several extended sections that featured snow, gravel and pavement.

Ice Bike race served as a capstone for the preceding week’s Winter Cycling Conference, which promoted cycling as a viable means for transportation in the winter.
