Winnipeg seeks public feedback on bike lane projects

Like other Canadian cities, Winnipeg has made a commitment to building a safe, accessible cycling network throughout the city.

Like other Canadian cities, Winnipeg has made a commitment to building a safe, accessible cycling network throughout the city, available to riders no matter what their age or skill level. Along with pedestrian-only routes, the city is concentrating its efforts on the downtown bike lane system and the West Alexander cycling corridor projects.

Now, Winnipeg is looking for input from residents, including cyclists, as the finishing touches move forward.

In the coming weeks, a series of drop-in events will be hosted at locations across the city, which Winnipeggers are invited to attend to see the design options of those downtown bike corridors for themselves. Teams involved in the development of the projects will also be on hand, answering and addressing public questions and comments.

Online resources, meanwhile, will be available to those unable to attend. Like the drop-in sessions , the city’s website will detail the project designs, invite feedback in the form of a survey, and facilitate discussion with project principals and other Winnipeggers through an online forum.

The drop-in sessions will be divided as follows according to each project:

Winnipeg downtown bike lane network

Project details: Upgrades to existing bike lanes on Fort Street and Garry Street, in addition to improved connections between bike lanes on Assiniboine Avenue and The Forks.

Drop-ins: Portage and Main underground rotunda, March 17 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm; Fort Garry Place mall, 85 Garry Street, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm; and The Forks market, March 20 from 12:30 to 2:30 pm.

West Alexander cycling corridor

Project details: Connecting bike- and pedestrian-only routes between McPhillips Street and Sherbrook Street.

Drop-ins: Health Sciences Centre at William Avenue Mall, March 15 from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm; University of Manitoba Bannatyne Campus, March 15 from 2:30 to 4:00 pm.
