The Women’s White Spot-Delta Road Race secured UCI 1.2 status next year. The race will be held on July 6 in conjunction with the men’s race during the Tour de Delta and B.C. Superweek.

“Cycling Canada is extremely pleased to see the White Spot | Delta Road Race for women has now been upgraded to UCI sanctioned event,” said John Tolkamp, President of Cycling Canada in a press release on the Tour de Delta website. “This is a tremendous development for women’s cycling and we thank all the supporters of the Delta Road Race for making a significant commitment and investment in supporting the growth of women’s cycling in Canada and North America.”

Canada now has three UCI-sanctioned events on the elite women’s UCI calendar that also includes the Grand Prix Cycliste de Gatineau and the Chrono Gatineau, both held in Ottawa in May.

“The Tour de Delta, along with all B.C. Superweek events, are committed to enhance the sport of cycling and provide the opportunity for local athletes to compete against some of the best athletes in North America and the world,” said White Spot-Delta Road Race Director Mark Ernsting. “With the inclusion of the women’s race into the UCI calendar, this adds significant profile to the Tour de Delta and overall series of B.C. Superweek.”

B.C. Superweek offers $110,000 in prize money during the nine races scheduled from July 4 to 13 in the Vancouver area. The Tour de Delta will kick off the series with three events that include the MK Delta Lands Criterium, Brenco Criterium and the UCI White Spot-Delta Road Race.

The series will continue with UBC Grand Prix presented by Mahony & Sons Public House criterium, the Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix and the Giro di Burnaby.

B.C. Superweek concludes with the three-race Tour de White Rock’s Homelife Realty Hill Climb, Choices Markets Criterium and the Peach Arch News Road Race.
