Woods at 101 to 1 odds to win Giro d’Italia

Froome and Dumoulin neck and neck with best odds

According to nicerodds.co.uk, Canadian Michael Woods, along with Wout Poels (The Netherlands/Sky) and Woods’ ex-teammate Davide Formolo (Italy/Bora-Hansgrohe), has 101 to 1 odds at winning the 2018 Giro d’Italia, which will kick off with a 9.7-km time trial in Jerusalem on Friday.

Nicerodds.co.uk is only one betting site; Ladbrokes, for instance, has Woods at 80 to 1 odds.

The best odds are for the winner of the last two Grand Tours, Chris Froome, at 3 to 1, and the current champion Tom Dumoulin at 3.5 to 1. The last rider to win consecutive Giro titles is Miguel Indurain in 1992 and 1993.

Friday will see the first Grand Tour under the new rules of having 8 riders on each team instead of 9. Of the 176 riders to take to the starting ramp on Friday, three are Canadian: Woods, Guillaume Boivin and Svein Tuft.

If Froome, Tony Martin (Germany/Katusha), Ruben Plaza (Spain/Israel Cycling Academy) or Zdenek Stybar (Czech Republic/Quick Step) can win a stage, he will have earned a victory in all three Grand Tours.

One rider who has had to abandon plans of racing his eighth corsa rosa is Filippo Pozzato of Wilier Triestina. The Italian’s father has taken turn for the worse in the hospital, so the 2006 Milan-San Remo winner has left Israel to fly back to Italy. He has been replaced with Alex Turrin.
