Wout van Aert is not a fan of the new Netflix Tour de France documentary
Belgian says some of the drama insinuated in the series simply wasn’t there
The Netflix docuseries, Tour de France: Unchained“, went live on June 8 and there’s already plenty of opinions, including that of Wout van Aert. The Belgian said he watched the show, and thinks that some of the friction between him and Jonas Vingegaard is greatly exaggerated.
“I finally got to take a look. Because, strange, but true, although I play one of the main roles, I didn’t know what there would be to see”, he told Sporza. “It’s quite disturbing that there were stories written in the documentary that weren’t there. For me, the series is focused on commotion.”

The green jersey winner said that the two Jumbo-Visma riders are great teammates.
“Jonas and I are best mates,” van Aert said. “We focus on moments when it is difficult to make the right choice, but there are also so many moments in which we have strengthened each other and worked together. It’s a shame that that was taken out.”
He added that for the 2023 edition he is fully prepared to help the Dane repeat his 2022 win. That means he is willing to keep his aspirations for the green jersey and points, as well as helping his teammate win the overall.
“I’ve been asked for a number of years whether that can be combined. Look at the races of previous years,” van Aert added. “It’s not that hard to put myself away from someone else as the leader of the team. This team is about give and take. Everyone gets a chance at some point.”
Van Aert returned to competition in the Tour de Suisse on Sunday where he finished third in the opening TT. The Belgian has been putting lots of work into his time trial position to be even faster in 2023.
