Yellow jersey sale raises money for cycling team

The yellow jersey won by Steve Bauer in 1990 raises money for Team Spidertech.

The final Tour de France yellow jersey won by Steve Bauer in 1990 was sold in an auction Jan. 28 to raise money for the Team Spidertech powered by Planet Energy professional cycling team. The jersey was sold to Toronto businessman Newton Glassman of the Catalyst Capital Group Inc. for $ 23,500. In all, nearly $ 50,000 was raised through the sale of the jersey, a team bicycle, team kit and a pair of trips through Steve Bauer Bike Tours. Team Spidertech, where Bauer is the director, is Canada’s only professional road racing team. At the launch, Bauer said he wants to see the team race in the Tour de France in the next few years. This season, 13 of the 15 riders are Canadian.

“We have to provide the opportunity for our own athletes. This is a great time for road cycling and now is the time for cycling in Canada to reach the big leagues,” said Bauer. The UCI Continental team is hoping to race the Tour of California in May and the two ProTour events in Quebec September 10 and 12.
