Cycling Canada announced on Friday that the 2018 Canadian elite, junior and para road championships were being relocated from Kamloops, B.C. to Saguenay, Que. with the date for the event going unchanged still taking place June 21 to 24. The decision was made because Cycling Canada and NTSQ Sports Group did not receive the municipal funding they had anticipated and logistical constraints.

“The decision to relocate the 2018 Canadian road championships was not taken lightly, although we are confident that this will provide the best possible outcome for all parties involved,” said Cycling Canada competitions coordinator Josh Peacok. “The organizers at GP Saguenay bring a wealth of experience to the organization of this Championship event, and we are excited to continue with the process of delivering this prestigious event in a region that has many years of experience in hosting high-level road cycling events.”

The move to Saguenay was made possible because the forced cancellation of the 2018 Grand Prix Cycliste de Saguenay which had been scheduled for June 8 and 9 but conflicted with the G7 Summit which is taking place at Le Manoir Richelieu in La Malbaie, Que. The GP Saguenay organizers have agreed to now take on the organization of the road national championships.

“We are happy to work with Cycling Canada on organizing the 2018 Global Relay Canadian road championships powered by Lexus (elite/junior/para) in Saguenay,” said Sébastien Gagnon the co-president of the GP Saguenay. “Our organizing committee is hard at work making sure that Canada’s top cyclists have access to fun and exciting races and enjoy their stay among us in Saguenay.”

Over the weekend, Canadian championships titles in elite, junior and para cycling will be awarded in the road race and individual time trial. The Masters Canadian road championships will take place June 1 to 3 in Victoria, B.C. as originally scheduled.
