La Leggendaria Charly Gaul: Gran fondo and amateur world championships qualifier

Partenza_colore03On July 20, thousands of riders will roll out of Trento, Italy, as part of la Leggendaria Charly Gaul. The gran fondo in Dolomites Mountains will have cyclists simply taking in the Italian countryside, while others hoping to compete at the amateur world championships will ride hard as La Leggendaria is a qualifier for the UCI event. This year marks the ninth year la Leggendaria will run. In 2014, 3,000 cyclists climbed the famous Monte Bondone (an elevation gain of more than 1,000 m), located just outside Trento. It is the same climb that Luxemburg rider Charly Gaul sealed his 1956 Giro d’Italia victory after persevering through adverse conditions.

La Leggendaria Charly Gaul is part of the UCI World Cycling Tour (UWCT), a series of events that are sanctioned by the UCI. These events are held Asia, Europe, North and South America and Australia. These races are qualifying events for the UCI amateur world championships formerly known as the masters world championships.

This year, the UCI amateur world championships in Ljubljana, Slovenia from Aug. 28-30. La Leggendaria Charly Gaul’s  24-km time trial in Cavedine – Valle dei Laghi and the 142-km road ride finishing on the summit of Monte Bondone are qualifiers for the worlds. The 60-km road ride is a qualifier for men and women 50-year-old and older.
