Ontario road race championships preview

Ontario’s heavy hitters are heading back to Holland Marsh for a second year

For the second year in a row, the Ontario road championships will be held in Holland Marsh near Bradford, Ont. On July 28, Spinsanity Cycles will hold the race on a 12-km circuit that features a 3-km climb every lap. It’s a puncheur’s course that will fit the abilities of the best-rounded cyclists.

The morning races will include the master’s categories for men and women in addition to the junior women’s race. There will also be a sportif men’s and women’s race. The afternoon races will feature the keystone events of the day, starting with the junior men, who will race 96 km with the Master B men. Elite women will also race at the same time. Finally the elite and under-23 men will race 144 km to crown the next Ontario elite men’s champion.

The heavy favourites for day’s major events include Ed Makarchuk of Sound Solutions, who will undoubtedly be looking to take the title in the Master A race. Ed Veal of Real Deal/Gears, hot off a batch of solid performances at BC Superweek, will be looking to add to is 2013 tally after winning the Ontario Cup road series for elite men overall. With the absence of defending champion, Yuri Hrycaj of Jefuel/Norco and with the rest of his team racing in the Tour de Quebec this week, the Ontario championships will be wide open and a new provincial champion will be crowned.
