Ottawa GranFondo set to roll through the Valley

Rolling course has challenges for all levels

Ashton, Perth, McDonalds Corners, Almonte and Carp are the postcard towns that make up the second edition of the Ottawa Gran Fondo. On July 20, cyclists in the nation’s capital will ride out of the city into the open, scenic farmlands to the southwest. Many winding roads and rolling climbs characterize the routes available in the mass-start event: CortoFondo (65 km), MedioFondo (100 km), GranFondo (170 km) and SuprFondo 220 km). “There are no really tough climbs, mostly rollers,” said Greg Capello, the fondo’s key organizer. “All four loops are beautiful as they roll through farmland and cottage country. The best and most scenic is the longest. I rode it last summer solo; it was long but well worth it.”

With several feed stations along on the way and two key climbs that serve as the big tests within the ride, the fondo encourages camaraderie through cycling while still providing ample challenge.

The Ottawa Grand Fondo coincides with the running of the world’s biggest bicycle race: le Tour de France. The spirit and excitement surrounding cycling will certainly add to an already bustling atmosphere at the gran fondo. “As a kid, I played hockey,” said Capello. “When the NHL playoffs were on, road hockey was energized, fun and memorable. The pros were the inspiration. The Ottawa Gran Fondo is in line with the Tour de France, everyone riding with their buddies in an event like ours during that time will be inspirational and fun.”
