National road champion races local event

Ryan Roth brings his maple-leaf jersey to southern Ontario

Ryan Roth (Champion System Pro Cycling) won the 45th Annual Springbank Road Race in London, Ont. Roth out rode everyone in the elite men’s field, soloing ahead of Jeff Schiller (Jetfuel-Norco) and Peter Morse (Octto-Cervelo) by 53 seconds. Roth was clearly in a league of his own on this past Sunday. The competition were quite clearly humbled, but impressed nonetheless. The native of Kitchener, Ont., appears well prepared for the upcoming Tour of California.

The 2-km circuit within London’s Springbank Park challenged the elite men’s field, splitting the peloton into several groups by the end of the race. The infamous, off-camber slightly downhill first turn is the most technical aspect of the loop. Following that, the riders gained momentum through the back leg of the circuit along the river. After a short punchy climb, the course winds back around the long, mostly straight 1-km finishing straight to complete the lap. The elite men rode this circuit 30 times for a short and fast 66 km of racing.

“Another awesome day for a race at Springbank, this year a.k.a. ‘Racing 101 with Ryan Roth,’” Octto-Cervelo rider Bayden Pritchard posted on Facebook.

Runner-up Jeffery Schiller said on social media, “Congrats to Ryan Roth (national champion) on his win. Class act, sir. Now good luck to you at California! Rep us proud.”

The next Ontario race, the Lake Of Bays Road Race, is scheduled for May 12.
