On Tuesday evening, Jacob Kauffmann (Garneau-Quebecor) won the 50km men’s Mardis Lachine criterium. Last night’s race was the ninth round of the series and Kauffman’s second win of the season after he won stage seven two weeks ago. William Goodfellow (Silber Pro Cycling) who is fresh from his stage three win at the Tour of Catskills finished in second while Conor Mullervy (Champion System – Stan’s No Tubes) finished third.

On a course that is best suited for pure sprinters a break-away of four riders managed to escape in the closing laps. Although it wasn’t a record setting evening the average speed was 48km/h which is still normally too fast for a break to stay away. Nevertheless, Goodfellow, Kauffman, Mullervy and Ugo Lapierre (Acquisio-ACQ) were able to pull away in the closing laps. Goodfellow who isn’t a sprinter admitted his only chance was win solo. He attacked and with 500m remaining it appeared as though he could win. Kauffman dug deep and passed him on the final stretch to take the win.

The overall classification of the series remained relatively unchanged atop the leader’s board. Simon Lambert-Lemay of Garneau-Quebecor sits comfortably in first. His teammate Pierrick Naud is in second and Stephen Keeping (Transport Lacombe) is in third. Next Tuesday’s race will be the final stage of the season. Given that last year it was a record setting evening – it’s safe to expect all of Lachine’s main protagonists to be in attendance.
